Noa Ben Shalom is an independent documentary photographer. Ben Shalom graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design-Jerusalem in 2001. Since then she participated in several group exhibitions in museums and galleries in Israel and other countries. In 2004 she was the director and curator of Artspace Gallery in Tel Aviv in which she curated and initiated social documentary exhibitions and projects.
Ben Shalom is currently working on a new series of photographs on the Golan Heights to be presented in the Tel Aviv Heder Gallery.
"I began photographing at the age of ten with a point and shot camera my father received from Time Magazine after the renewal of his subscription.
One way or another, photography has always been a part of my life. I use the camera to explore, in my own personal way, the endless mosaic which composes the fabric of Israeli society. What fascinates me is not the so-called authenticity of the photographic image but the opportunity it gives the spectators to linger with the image and look for themselves in it.
During the past six years I have been dealing with issues pertaining to the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. I wish to capture with my photographs quiet yet vital moments, which depict the mundane nature of the conflict rather than the dramatic events we usually see in the media.
Confronting this subject is especially challenging for me since it raises many questions on the photographic- ethical level, moral personal issues and it also requires an intensive confrontation with ones sense of national remorse, emotional wounds, fears and hopes for a better future." -Noa Ben Shalom
